Direct Support Professional (DSP)

Your Role & Key Responsibilities (DSP Duties) As a Direct Support Professional, your primary role is to provide person-centered support to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, assisting them in achieving their goals as outlined in their Individual Service Plan (ISP) and according to Agency standards and DD Waiver requirements. You must have a working vehicle available to perform some of these duties. Your key responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Activities of Daily Living (ADLs): Providing assistance, support, and skill-building related to bathing, eating, meal preparation, dressing, personal hygiene, and other daily routines.

  • Household Environment: Assisting individuals to attain and maintain a safe, clean, and sanitary living environment. This involves general housekeeping tasks, grocery shopping, laundry assistance, keeping rooms and bathrooms tidy, ensuring proper food storage and supply, managing trash disposal (including taking bins to the curb), and promoting energy conservation (e.g., turning off lights). Encourage individual participation in these tasks based on their goals and abilities.

  • Health and Medical Support:

o Assisting with medication management strictly according to the state's AWMD policy and specific training (see Section 4.4).

o Monitoring medication supplies and reporting needs promptly to the designated nurse or coordinator.

o Assisting individuals in accessing necessary medical, dental, therapy, nutritional, behavioral, and nursing care appointments and services, coordinating with the individual's team.

o Advocating for the individual's needs during appointments and ensuring clear communication with providers (see Section 4.6).

o Implementing specific instructions from Health Care Plans, therapy plans (PT, OT, SLP), Mealtime Plans, MERPs, etc., as directed by licensed professionals (see Section 4.3).

o Ensuring any Durable Medical Equipment (DME) used by the individual (such as CPAP machines, wheelchairs, lifts) is properly maintained, cleaned, and functioning correctly, reporting any issues promptly.

  • Community Integration and Relationships: Assisting individuals with mobility, orientation, and safe participation in community activities; supporting them in accessing recreational and leisure opportunities of their choice; and assisting in developing and maintaining positive social, spiritual, and personal relationships, including fostering connections with natural supports (family, friends, community members).

  • Skill Development: Assisting individuals in accessing training and educational opportunities relevant to their goals, including topics like self-advocacy and sexuality awareness, as appropriate and outlined in their ISP. Implementing specific teaching strategies outlined in the ISP to help individuals achieve greater independence.

  • Behavioral Support: Implementing Positive Behavior Support Plans (BSPs) and Crisis Prevention/Intervention Plans consistently and accurately as written and trained.

  • Transportation: Providing safe and reliable transportation using your personal vehicle as needed for medical appointments, community inclusion activities, shopping, work, leisure events, etc., according to the individual's ISP and schedule (see Section 6.7).

  • Documentation: Completing all required documentation accurately, objectively, and in a timely manner using the designated systems (see Section 4.8).

  • Following Directives: Adhering to reasonable work-related instructions and directives from Agency management, including Directors, Office Managers, Coordinators, and shift Direct Support Supervisors (DSS).

  • Attentiveness and Supervision: Providing attentive and appropriate supervision according to the specific levels defined in each individual's ISP (see Section 4.7).

  • Flexibility and Teamwork: Understanding that staffing ratios may vary (potentially up to four individuals per DSP depending on the setting and needs) requiring effective time management. Being willing to be cross-trained and support different individuals as assigned (see Section 4.2).

  • Other Duties: Performing other related tasks and duties as assigned by Agency management necessary for the provision of quality services and smooth operation.

Hiring & DSP Requirements Hiring decisions are based on an applicant's qualifications, relevant experience, and suitability for providing compassionate and effective support to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. To be hired and maintain employment as a DSP, you must meet and maintain the following requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years of age.

  • Possess a high school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).

  • Possess and maintain a valid state-issued driver's license.

  • Possess and maintain current certification in CPR and First Aid.

  • Have a reliable, clean, working vehicle suitable for work purposes, including client transport (see Section 6.7).

  • Maintain a functional cell phone with an active voicemail service for necessary work-related communications.

  • Successfully pass all required background checks upon hire and during employment (see Section 2.4).

  • Provide all required documentation, such as references, credentials, proof of auto insurance, etc., in a timely manner.
